Hummingbird Residence

To design in accordance with the desert wash that flows down the middle of the site, the Hummingbird Residence contains an arching bridge that spans 35’ over the wash to minimize its impact on this natural site feature that periodically floods during heavy rainstorms. Clad in a warm naturally oxidized metal, the arched bridge and swooping roofs recall the flight path of a hummingbird.

Site-matched masonry provides a solid base for this topographic site and extends upwards in key places to provide privacy to select areas of the home. In contrast, generously sized glass panels span between the masonry allow for ample daylight enhance the spaciousness of the rooms. Upon entering the home, one is greeted with the more public programs of the home including the kitchen, living, and dining spaces that are covered by a taller roof that allows soft daylight to filter through the clerestory windows above. Multiple outdoor terraces extend from this wing to create additional gathering places and entertainment spaces adjacent to the pool. The curved articulation of the bridge not only frames in the main entertainment terrace complete with a curved negative edge pool and ample areas for lounging, but also is the transition into the private area of the home complete with four bedrooms.
